Plane Dressing: Tips for Comfy but Classy Airport Outfits

Outer Layer 

Not too warm, not too light, just right. Here you want a mid-weight layer that’s easy to carry around and can (ideally) double as a blanket on the plane.

Below we'll present you with some refined but comfortable choices. Keep in mind you might want to double up here. For example, pair a long coat or blazer with a sweater for a layered approach to dealing with fluctuating plane temperatures.

Pro tip: save luggage space by wearing a bulkier jacket you need for your trip.  

Base Layer Top 

For your top, you want something light and easy. That’s the key to comfort from security to the gate to your seat. If it starts getting hot, you should be able to easily shed your outer layer and stay comfortable in this top.Here's what we think you should go with.

Tank Tops 

For when you’re heading somewhere hot. Just throw on your mid-weight outer layer if you start getting the chills on the flight. There are plenty of necklines, patterns, and fabrics to choose from to suit your needs and destination. 

T-Shirts

The basic but versatile choice. It can work for destinations both warm and tepid. Go with something minimalist and fitted if you want a refined aesthetic, but an oversized graphic tee can be a fun choice too. A shirt in a modal blend will always offer super soft and breathable comfort. For colder locales you can go with long sleeves for that extra arm coverage.  

Poplin Button Ups 

A button-up (oversized or fitted) has versatility that suits both getaways and work trips. The white or striped varieties can double as beachy sun cover-ups or classy-but-casual meeting attire. Wear these as an extra layer over a tee or on its own -- in any case it makes for a great travel look.  

Bottoms 

Comfortable, but stylish. It’s possible at the airport too. Let’s channel a 90s off-duty model look with some wide-leg pants, or go a little more practical with cargos or jeans. Bonus points for wearing something that doesn’t require a belt. Being more metal-detector friendly can save you time and hassle at security.

Here are our recommendations for refined but comfortable bottoms.

Relaxed Jeans  

Straight, loose, or even baggy. Low, mid, or high-rise. The choice is yours. The key here is only to wear something comfy (which looser jeans tend to be) and, again, something that doesn’t need a belt. 

Utility or Cargo Pants 

Extra pockets for necessities like gum and ear buds, plus that loose comfort. They’re an easy travel choice, especially if you're going somewhere with outdoor activities like hiking.  

Jeggings 

The comfort of leggings with the style of jeans. It’s a win-win. Try out some of the pairs below, we won’t tell anyone you’re not wearing “real” pants.  

Footwear 

You want to go for something that’s comfy and easy to pull off. Flats are coming back and are a good choice, but something like loafers can add a touch of class with that same slip-on convenience.  

If you have a pair of comfortable boots that are easy to take on and off, you might opt to wear those to save space in your luggage. Clogs or mules are another good option, and of course sneakers. 

Bon Voyage 

When done right, your airport outfit should also suit your tip. That way you can use the same pieces for other travel looks. Plus, you save some luggage space by wearing the bulkier pieces you can comfortably sport on the plane.
