The Canadian Tuxedo: How to Wear Denim-on-Denim

The Canadian Tuxedo: How to Wear Denim-on-Denim The Canadian Tuxedo: How to Wear Denim-on-Denim

As a Canadian brand, we’d like to think we’ve mastered the fine art of denim on denim, otherwise known as the Canadian Tuxedo.

Sure, denim is the definition of casual, but an all-jean outfit can have enough swagger to appear on red carpets (think Britney and JT or Katy Perry and Riff Raff) and couture runways (check out Dior or Balenciaga). With the versatility to be dramatic and edgy or understated and simple, it’s a look you need in your repertoire.

But let’s not over complicate things. The idea behind a denim-on-denim outfit is that it’s quick to throw together with pieces you already have, so here’s our quick rundown of some tried-and-true women’s Canadian Tuxedo outfits for inspiration.

But first, a bit of history.

Why do we call it a Canadian Tuxedo?

Where did this legendary look get its name? As much as we’d love to claim it as 100% Canadian, we actually owe it to an American crooner—none other than Bing Crosby.

Legend has it Bing was denied entry to a swanky Vancouver hotel because he was wearing jeans. Levi’s saw the PR potential and whipped up a custom tuxedo for him made entirely out of their signature denim. The press had a field day and, just like that, the Canadian Tuxedo was born.

Luckily, you don’t need a tailor-made denim suit to pull off this look. Here’s how to wear a Canadian Tuxedo to have you feeling like the most stylish Canuck on the block.

Canadian Tuxedo vs. Texas Tuxedo

The double denim look is also often called a Texas Tuxedo, but the Texas version usually throws in some cowboy boots or a hat for that extra yeehaw factor. Around here, though, we’re partial to the Canadian Tuxedo—because, well, we’re Canadian.

Classic Canadian Tuxedo Outfit: Jean Jacket and Jeans

This is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the term. It’s a classic outfit that usually consists of a trucker style denim jacket and jeans. For this look we prefer straight jeans, bootcuts, or flares, but oversized looks are on trend recently -- and slim and skinny jeans can work too.

It’s a popular everyday look you’ll see all around town, but it’s also made some iconic appearances in Hollywood. Think Martin Sheen in Badlands, Keanu Reeves in Point Break, and Marilyn Monroe in The Misfits. It’s a simple, timeless look that anyone can pull off

Keep it classic with a plain white t-shirt or add a little personality with your favourite graphic tee or button up blouse. On your feet, sneakers can work (try Chuck Taylors or Stan Smiths) and so can boots (hiking boots or Chelseas), but you can also dress it up with a pair of heels or some loafers.

Retro Canadian Tuxedo Outfit: Denim Shirt and Jeans

If you’re looking to channel some serious 90s vibes, pairing your jeans with a classic denim shirt is the way to go.

Whether it’s a Western-style shirt with pointed shoulder yokes and pockets or a simple oversized dad-style button-up, this look is as nostalgic as it is on-trend. Think about those effortless 90s celeb airport pics when putting this look together. A sleeveless denim shirt can work here too, channeling Gina Davis in Thelma and Louise.

For the jeans, you can’t go wrong with the straight leg silhouette, but don’t be afraid to experiment with loose or relaxed fits for that full throwback feel. On your feet, sneakers keep the look casual, while loafers or boots can add a bit of flair.

Western shirts bring a fun, rugged element to the outfit (dress it up a bit with a bolo tie), but a plain denim button-up is might be more versatile. It’ll work with just about any pair of jeans in your closet and easily layer over a t-shirt or tank. It’s a simple combination that anyone can pull off with a nod to the past and a wink to current trends.

Summer Canadian Tuxedo Outfit: Denim Vest and Jean Shorts

When the temperature starts to heat up, swap out your jeans for denim shorts and your jacket or shirt for a denim vest. This is your go-to summer Canuck Tux look, perfect for street parties, festivals, rodeos, and any occasion where you want to stay cool without sacrificing style.

For the shorts, you can go with classic cut-offs or tailored denim shorts, depending on your vibe. And they don’t have to be short shorts (though those are always fun). You can try Bermuda-length jean shorts as well. Try the denim vest over a tank or tee, or even rock it on its own. The vest can be fitted or oversized, depending on the look you’re after.

Footwear is where you can really play around—sneakers or sandals are the obvious choice for summer vibes, but for day-to-night looks you can opt for some chunky boots or strappy heels.

This summer twist on the Canadian Tuxedo is all about embracing the season while keeping that classic denim-on-denim spirit alive. It’s effortless, fun, and has just the right amount of rebelliousness for your next outdoor bash.

Fall Canadian Tuxedo Outfit: Denim Skirt and Denim Top

Fall is the perfect time to showcase the versatility of that denim skirt you have in your closet, and midi lengths are especially in vogue right now. This Canadian Tuxedo variation is all about layering up with denim, making it ideal for crisp autumn days.

Start with a denim midi skirt, it mixes style and functionality with its easy denim look, calf length coverage, and plenty of pockets. Pair it with a tucked in denim shirt for a classic look or go for a more relaxed vibe by wearing the shirt untucked over white tee. This look also works with a jean jacket or denim vest. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, mix and match different shades of denim for an eye-catching effect.

Footwear options are as versatile as the outfit itself. For a casual touch, sneakers are always a solid choice. If you’re looking to add a bit more edge, opt for ankle boots, knee highs, or combat boots. On milder days, sandals can keep things light and breezy.

This Canadian Tuxedo outfit is perfect for transitioning through the seasons while keeping your style game strong.

Feminine Canadian Tuxedo Outfit: The Denim Dress

So, does a denim dress qualify as a Canadian Tuxedo? Traditionally, it’s all about pairing two denim pieces, but we say if it’s head-to-toe denim, it’s fair game.

A jean dress is a cheeky take on denim to begin with, combining a hardy fabric with a feminine silhouette. So, whether it’s a button-up, a fitted cut, or a breezy tiered piece, a dress is always a fun twist on the all-denim theme. To turn up the Canuck Tux factor, layer on more denim—a chore coat or shirt will do the trick, adding that extra denim-on-denim punch.

For shoes, sneakers always work, but ankle boots or knee-highs will really shine. On warmer days, sandals or low-top sneakers can keep the outfit light.

So, while the denim dress might bend the rules of the traditional Canadian Tuxedo, adding more denim layers can keep it in line.

Conclusion: Mix and Match Your Own

The best thing about the Canadian Tuxedo? The possibilities are practically endless. Mix, match, and make it your own—these are just a few ideas to get those creative gears turning.

Have fun with it, and remember, our denim collection is here to help you fill in any gaps. Chances are, we’ve got something on sale too. So, whether you’re going all-blue, all-black, or mixing it up, just remember: when in doubt, double the denim.
